Step 1

Know that the Bible is divided into two main sections:

  • Old Testament – 39 books
  • New Testament – 27 books

Step 2

Know the major divisions of each testament:

Old Testament:

  • Law
  • History
  • Poetry
  • Prophets

New Testament:

  • History
  • Epistles
  • Prophecy

 Step 3

 Add detail:

 Old Testament

  • Law – 5
  • History – 12
  • Poetry – 5
  • Prophets – 5 Major & 12 Minor

New Testament

  • History – 5
  • Epistles – 13 Pauline & 8 General
  • Prophecy – 1

Step 4

Add book names:

Old Testament

Law – 5
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy

History – 12
Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1&2 Samuel, 1&2 Kings, 1&2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther

Poetry – 5
Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon

Major Prophets – 5
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel

Minor Prophets – 12
Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi

New Testament

History

  • Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)
  • Acts

Pauline Epistles – 13
Romans, 1&2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1&2 Thessalonians, 1&2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon

General Epistles – 8
Hebrews, James, 1&2 Peter, 1&2&3, Jude

Prophecy

Steps 1-4 can be done on a dry-erase board in less than five minutes.

Final Step

This step is optional – verbally give a quick summary (1-2 sentences) of the content of every book
